The garage vote: how readers steer JalopyTalk

JalopyTalk tells the story of the cars, trucks and roadside culture of the last seventy years. Alongside the stories, readers cast anonymous one-tap votes on the machines themselves — and we publish what thousands of those votes add up to. That means you get answers based on what real car people actually loved, not one writer’s opinion.

Two layers, one site

Think of the site as running on two tracks.

01Layer one

The stories

Real coverage of specific vehicles, specific decades and the culture around them — written to inform, entertain and bring back the Saturday mornings in the garage.

02Layer two

The data underneath

As you read, you can react to the cars in the pictures, pick between two photos, answer a poll or guess an old sticker price. Counted anonymously across thousands of readers, those signals become data-backed pieces about what car people actually love — something no spec sheet or auction result can show.

What we measure

Only the signals readers choose to give, plus ordinary page analytics.

01

Lived it · Remember it

On nostalgia pieces, one tap tells us whether you drove it, remember it, or it was before your time — so we can map which decades our readers actually lived.

02

Hot or Not

Two photos, one pick. Head-to-head matchups rank the body styles, colours and eras readers would actually park in their driveway.

03

Reactions & the “why?”

A heart or thumbs-down under a photo, with an optional one-tap reason — the body style, the chrome, “my family had one”, “looks unreliable”.

04

Polls

Short polls that settle old arguments: bench seat or buckets, knobs or touchscreen, convertible, muscle car or pickup.

05

Guess the price

On stories about what things used to cost, guess the old price before it is revealed — and see how close readers came.

06

Saves & reading activity

Saving an image or article (your list lives in your browser), plus which photos were viewed, scroll depth and time on page.

What’s stored with each signal

What we keep

A random session ID that isn’t linked to your name, email or any account · your device type · how you arrived (Pinterest, Facebook, a search engine and so on) · an approximate region at the state or province level, worked out at the network edge. Your IP address is not stored with this data. When a visit comes from one of our ads, we may attach the ad platform’s aggregate audience breakdown for that ad — the age-range and gender mix of everyone the ad reached — never anything about you personally.

What these features never collect

What we never take

  • Your name, email address or any account details
  • Your IP address or precise location
  • Anything you type
  • Who you are — there is no profile of you, only anonymous totals
  • Your licence plate, VIN or anything about the vehicles you own
Car magazines could never tell you what their readers actually loved. Now we can count it — and share it.

How results get published

Totals, never people.

We only publish totals and percentages across many readers, and small groups are never reported. After you vote, the page shows live results once enough readers have answered; the bigger findings become articles — which eras readers lived through, which vanished features they miss, and which ones they are glad are gone.

Images are described by their attributes — body style, era, colour, condition and setting — so reactions can be grouped into findings. We don’t use facial recognition, and people in photos are never identified.

Your choices

Take part, or don’t. Your call.

Every one of these features is optional: if you’d rather not take part, simply don’t tap. Saved images and articles live in your own browser, so clearing your browser storage removes them. Newsletter sign-ups and our advertising and analytics partners are covered separately in our Privacy Policy.
