14 Cars Similar the Toyota Avalon

Front view of brown Toyota Avalon on car show.

With the growing trend of SUVs and compact SUVs, more car companies are making fewer full-sized cars. However, there are still some great large cars on the market today for those not ready to bite the SUV bullet. One such car is the Toyota Avalon.

This large car provides generous space within the interior, ample trunk space, and a luxurious body style with a pleasing aesthetic. It also gets competitive gas mileage of 22/32 MPG, has a decent price point at just over $36,000, and is an extremely safe vehicle.

There are a few cars that are similar to the Toyota Avalon. My three favorites are the Nissan Maxima, the Dodge Charger, and the Kia Stinger.

These three vehicles all have similar perks, comparable prices, and are also full-sized sedans. While the full-sized sedan is being produced less, there are still a respectable number of options to choose from.

Top Three Cars Similar to Toyota Avalon

1. 2022 Nissan Maxima

The Nissan Maxima is one of the lead competitors for the Toyota Avalon. The Maxima is comparable in gas mileage, cost, size, and horsepower.

The 2022 Maxima comes in with a slightly more expensive starting MSRP of $37,240, and it doesn’t get quite as good gas mileage, averaging 20/30 MPG. A standard V6 engine teamed with a CVT generates 300 horsepower.

The Maxima received high safety marks, like the Avalon, and provides a spacious and comfortable interior. The 2022 Maxima checks about every box the Avalon does, and the fully stocked Platinum trim only costs $5,000 more than the base trim.

2. 2022 Dodge Charger

Front view of white 2022 Dodge Charger in parking area.

The 2022 Dodge Charger is another full-sized vehicle with many similarities to the 2022 Avalon. The two cars are comparable in gas mileage, standard engine size, and standard engine horsepower.

However, the exterior aesthetic of the Dodge Charger is that of a muscle car rather than the Avalon’s sleek look. The standard 3.6L V6 gets 19/30 MPG and produces 292 horsepower. The 2022 Charger offers trims with larger V8 engines.

Depending on the trim level, the Charger can come stocked with a 5.7L or 6.4L V8, or it can come with an extremely powerful 6.2L supercharged V8. The supercharged motor goes from 0 to 60 MPH in under four seconds.

If you want some speed and power instead of fuel economy, then the 2022 Charger with one of the bigger engines will be your best option.

3. 2022 Kia Stinger

The 2022 Kia Stinger provides a lot of similarities to the Toyota Avalon. The two cars provide similar gas mileage, starting MSRP, horsepower, and even body style. If you want a vehicle with a similar sporty but sleek aesthetic, the Kia Stinger looks the most like the Avalon.

It gets 22/32 MPG with its base four-cylinder turbo-powered engine that produces 300 horsepower. The Stinger’s starting MSRP of $36,090 is less than $200 less than the Avalon.

Like the Avalon and the Maxima, the Stinger is another large sedan with outstanding safety ratings and features. If desired, there are pricier trims featuring a large V6 engine.

Large Luxury Sedans

While some may describe the Kia Stinger or Toyota Avalon as borderline luxury vehicles, or at least they provide a luxury vibe.

However, the Avalon and the previously listed cars are not considered luxury vehicles. The following vehicles are considered luxury vehicles, which creates some differences from the previous vehicles.

While the following vehicles will be large sedans of a similar size, they will be more expensive due to the materials and amenities. Here is a trio of luxury sedans similar to the 2022 Toyota Avalon.

1. 2022 Chrysler 300

Side view of gray 2022 Chrysler 300 on car show.

If you are looking for a more classic look in your large sedan, then the 2022 Chrysler 300 is your car. The Chrysler 300 is similar to the Avalon due to its roomy interior, fuel economy, and horsepower.

The 300 provides a standard 3.6L V6 engine that generates 292 horsepower and gets 19/30 MPG. The car comes with available AWD and RWD drive trains, and a very affordable $32,615 starting MSRP.

While I wouldn’t say that the Chrysler 300 is an unsafe vehicle, its average crash test and safety scores pale compared to the Avalon and other cars like the Stinger and Maxima.

Overall, the body style is what will make you either love or hate this car. The size, interior space, and trunk space are all very good and comparable to the other large sedans. But no other large sedan provides the classic body style and aesthetic like the 300.

2. 2022 Lexus LS

It is only fitting to include the 2022 Lexus LS on this list as Lexus is Toyota’s luxury class of cars. The Lexus LS is a more glamorous and powerful version of the Toyota Avalon.

It is a similar-sized car with a standard V6 engine that produces 416 horsepower and travels from 0 to 60 in five seconds. However, the added zip hurts the fuel economy; the LS gets 18/29 MPG. This car is big, spacious, and luxurious on the inside with excellent design and materials.

The car is fun to drive, and it provides an eye-catching body style that your friends will notice. If you can afford a luxury sedan, the 2022 Lexus LS is on the cheaper side of the luxury class with a starting MSRP of $76,000.

3. 2022 Genesis G90

The 2022 Genesis G90 is another full-sized luxury sedan that ranges on the cheaper end of the luxury class. The G90 is similar to the Toyota Avalon due to its size, space, and excellent safety ratings. The 2022 G90 has a standard 3.3L twin-turbo V6 engine with 365 horsepower.

Like the Lexus LS, some of that added power hurts the overall fuel economy, and the G90 averages 17/24 MPG. This car is a top safety pick in its class, scoring well on crash tests and overall safety ratings.

The exterior of the car is silky smooth with a distinctive luxury aesthetic. The starting MSRP for the Genesis G90 is $73,950.

4. 2022 BMW 7-Series

Front view of black 2022 BMW 7-Series on car show.

You cannot have a list of luxury sedans without including at least one German car. The 2022 BMW 7-Series is the largest sedan the German manufacturer makes. This car is similar in size, standard engine size, and safety to the Toyota Avalon.

The 7-Series base engine is a 3.0 L I-6 engine with 335 horsepower and 22/29 MPG. You will notice that the base engine is similar in power, fuel economy, and horsepower to the Avalon.

That is because BMW provides multiple V8 options and even a V12 for the 7-Series for those that want more power. This car looks modern with some classic nods to older BMW styles on the exterior. The starting MSRP for the 2022 BMW 7-Series is $86,800.

MidSized Sedans like the Avalon

Now that we have explored large sedans and large luxury sedans, here are some mid-sized sedans that have similarities to the Toyota Avalon.

While the Luxury cars I mentioned before were similar in size and space but were much more expensive, these next cars will be slightly smaller than the 2022 Avalon.

And the base-level motors may be somewhat less powerful, and the starting MSRPs will probably be cheaper. Smaller cars cost less money. But, I have selected most of these midsized sedans for being roomy and comfortable despite being smaller than the Avalon.

1. 2022 Subaru Legacy

The 2022 Subaru Legacy is similar to the Toyota Avalon due to its spacious interior, large trunk, and excellent safety ratings. The Legacy comes stocked with a smaller four-cylinder engine that gets 27/35 MPG.

And while other larger engines are available, they are not on the same level as the V6 on the Avalon. However, the Legacy does have a comfortable interior with lots of legroom despite being mid-size, and the starting MSRP is only $22,995.

While the Legacy may not have as much zip or power as the Toyota Avalon, it is still a roomy vehicle with excellent safety ratings. Those looking for a budget option should look hard at the Subaru Legacy.

2. 2022 Honda Accord

Sid view of white 2022 Honda Accord on road.

The Honda Accord is a good car that performs well in many metrics. It is similar to the Toyota Avalon due to its comfortable interior, roomy trunk, great safety ratings, and sporty exterior.

Honda stocks the Accord with a 1.5L four-cylinder engine that gets significantly less horsepower than the V6 in the Avalon. A turbocharged four-cylinder engine will get closer to 250 horsepower on more expensive trims.

But, while it may not have a powerful engine, the Accord averages 30/38 MPG with its standard engine. The Accord has been tested as one of the safest vehicles in crash tests and overall ratings, and with a starting MSRP of $25,470, it stands out as a very affordable and safe mid-size car.

3. 2022 Kia K5

Side view of gray 2022 Kia K5 on road.

The Kia Ki5 is the younger sibling to the Kia Stinger mentioned above. It is similar to the Avalon due to its noticeable body style and ample trunk space. While the K5 may look flashy on the exterior, it runs on a 1.6L turbocharged I4 engine that only generates 180 horsepower.

The K5 gets excellent fuel economy averaging 29/38 MPG. It does provide comfortable seating arrangements and a good amount of trunk space, starting at only $23,690.

However, those wanting more power and roominess as the Avalon provides may find the K5 too small.

4. 2022 Hyundai Sonata

Side view of black 2022 Hyundai Sonata on car show.

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata provides many of the same benefits that the Toyota Avalon has. The Sonata has excellent safety ratings, a comfortable interior, and an impressive exterior look.

Like most other mid-size sedans, the Sonata comes stocked with a smaller engine than the Avalon. The Sonata’s 2.5L I-4 engine produces 190 horsepower and gets 28/38 MPG. Like the Avalon, the Hyundai has ensured that the Sonata test well on crash testing and other safety metrics.

With the smaller engine and smaller body style, the Sonata does not have all the comforts and cargo space the Avalon has, but it makes up for it with great interior technology and excellent gas mileage.

With a starting MSRP of $24,340, the Hyundai Sonata is a viable option for smaller families.

5. 2022 Volkswagen Passat

The Volkswagen Passat comes into this lineup as a mid-size sedan with a lot of interior space and trunk room. Beyond being roomy and having a good cargo capacity, the Passat runs on a smaller engine and smaller body style.

It gets 24/36 MPG with its 2.0L four-cylinder motor. It only gets 174 horsepower, but it does have above average safety ratings. The Passat can be a budget option for a family that needs more space in their car.

With a starting MSRP of $27,295, the Passat can still undercut the prices of the cheapest full-sized vehicles.

6. 2022 Toyota Camry

Obviously, the Toyota Camry is the little sister to the Avalon. With a similar exterior aesthetic, excellent safety features, and efficient gas mileage, there is a lot to like with the Camry if you like the Avalon.

This smaller car runs on a 2.5L four-cylinder engine with just over 200 horsepower, and it gets 28-39 MPG. While a smaller car, the Camry still provides great legroom and trunk space.

And, like the Avalon, it has high safety ratings and many standard safety features. If you are looking for a more fuel-efficient car like the Avalon, then the Camry may be the car for you, and it starts at only $25,295.

7. 2022 Nissan Altima

The Nissan Altima may be a mid-size while the Maxima is the full-size, but Nissan has made the most of the space in the trunk and back seat with the smaller car.

The Nissan Altima is similar to the Toyota Avalon due to its roomy and comfortable interior and smooth drive. The 2022 Altima runs on a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that gets 28/39 MPG.

While it is more economical regarding fuel, the Altima cannot compete with the power of full-sized cars. So, if having some zip in the motor is your goal, you will need the bigger engines in the full-sized models.

However, the Altima is an excellent car for comfort and driving, and it provides a great amount of space. Its starting MSRP is $24,550.
