I remember hearing about electric cars with skepticism, and now, whenever I see a Tesla moving down the road, I regret my ignorance. While Tesla may be the frontrunner in electric vehicles, now, more than ever, Tesla sees more competition for its electric lineup.
The Tesla Model S has been a staple and, at times, the only luxury electric car. However, other companies like Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes have made electric cars. And now, Audi is in the electric luxury car market.
As of 2022, the Audi E-Tron GT has thrown its hat in the ring. Here is a comparison of these two luxury electric cars.

The Tesla Model S
The Tesla Model S took center stage in the automotive world with its release in 2012. As a pioneer in electric vehicles, Tesla has continued innovating and improving their electric cars. The 2022 Tesla Model S provides amazing technology on the interior and a silky-smooth ride with a futuristic body style. Tesla has been finetuning this machine for over a decade to provide a user-friendly and luxurious driving experience.
The Audi E-Tron GT
While the Audi E-Tron GT was released earlier this year, it comes from a company that has thrived in making luxury vehicles. The E-Tron GT provides a beautiful exterior with a sporty feel.
Audi stocked this car with a comfortable and luxurious interior that creates a superb driving experience. The E-Tron GT fits Audi’s luxury lineup because it is a high-performer, and it gets where it is going in style.
Head to Head Comparison
Both vehicles have a lot of similarities, as they both seat five people, are incredibly high-tech, and provide lots of bells and whistles. But there are some features that EV owners will look for, and we will compare and contrast some of the most important aspects: battery range, engine performance, style, cost, and tech.
Battery Range
The charging range is practically the vehicle’s fuel economy with electric cars. Ideally, owners want to know how far they can go between charges. When comparing the 2022 models of the Audi E-Tron GT and the Tesla Model S, it isn’t all that close of a race.
The Model S vastly outclasses the E-Tron GT, as the Model S driving range is just over 400 miles while the E-Tron GT tops out at 238 miles. In this regard, the extra decade of mastering electric cars has been an advantage for Tesla.
Engine Performance
Another important factor for many drivers is how well the engine will perform. Now, I want to say this before any comparison. Both of these cars are faster than anything I have ever driven. However, one has more horsepower and speed than the other.
And again, Tesla provides more zip to their Model S. According to Motortrend, the Tesla Model S generates 670 horsepower and can reach 0 to 60 in 3.1 seconds. The E-Tron GT produces 522 horsepower and can get 0 to 60 in 3.6 seconds.
Now those are two very fast and very powerful cars.
However, those speeds and performances are for the smaller base models. The Audi E-Tron GT RS model cranks out 637 horsepower and reaches 60 MPH in an astonishing 2.9 seconds.
And, for those that do not wish to live long on this earth, the Tesla Model S Plaid’s tri-motor setup produces an astounding 1,020 horsepower and reaches 0 to 60 in about two seconds flat.
If that isn’t enough zip for you, I don’t think I want to know the type of thrills you are searching for.
Style
These cars showcase attractive body styles and interiors that provide a lot of luxury and comfort expected in high-end vehicles. However, in this category, Audi delivers a better aesthetic.
While the Model S has an attractive exterior with a futuristic aesthetic, Audi’s G-Tron GT provides an aggressive and more appealing overall body style.
Tesla does not incorporate a steering wheel on the interior and instead uses a futuristic yoke one might see on a sci-fi film. Tesla also changed some designs on the seats and other interior sections that sacrificed some comfort and space.
On the other hand, Audi provides a spacious interior with comfortable amenities. And this car uses a steering wheel.
Cost
As one might expect, neither of these cars are cheap, and while they are comparable, Tesla can provide a slightly base price. The standard Model S has a starting MSRP of $94,990, unlike the standard E-Tron GT, which starts at $102,400.
The more expensive trims of the Model S Plaid and the E-Tron GT RS both round out to be around $140,000.
Technology
Both of these vehicles come loaded with technological features for safety and entertainment. While the Tesla Model S may provide a less comfortable futuristic aesthetic, they have a slight edge in the technology department. T
esla has fantastic safety features, with an addable automatic pilot system. The standard driver-assist technology is unequaled in the Model S. The Model S also provides fun capabilities through its infotainment system like playable games.
The E-Tron is slightly less technological. However, it also offers great safety features and an easy-to-use infotainment system.
Which is Better?
Tesla has a lot more experience than Audi in making electric vehicles. And, while the Audi E-Tron GT is a comfortable luxury vehicle. Ultimately, Tesla excels at just too many categories.
The Tesla Model S goes farther between charges, has a higher-performing engine, better technology, and finally, is cheaper. However, I understand if the spaceship steering yoke is a deal-breaker. Or, if you just love how good the E-Tron GT looks, I also understand.
In the end, I would go with the 2022 Tesla Model S over the 2022 Audi E-Tron GT. But, remember this is the E-Tron’s first year in production, and maybe in a few years, Audi will improve on this model, and we could have a different conversation.
