Mazda CX-5

Front side view angle of a new gray Mazda CX-5 at a Mazda Auto dealership store at Jakarta, Indonesia.

The new Mazda CX-5 provides a brilliant design and elegant interior that makes it comparable to cars outside its price bracket. It would be difficult to find a car in this price range that could offer the quality Mazda provides with the new CX-5.

The CX-5 is currently offered in eight different trims, ranging from $27,475 to $40,225. I would recommend the Turbo trim since it has an upgraded engine which gives you a quicker throttle response. It also has improved handling, sporty accents on the exterior, and red stitching on the seats.

There are two options when it comes to the engine configuration of the CX-5. The 187 horsepower four-cylinder comes standard, while the 250-horsepower turbocharged engine is available in higher trims.

All-wheel drive is standard across all models as well as a 6-speed automatic transmission. 0-60 in the CX-5 is accomplished in 6.1 seconds with a top speed of 130 mph.

The standard engine configuration is rated at 24 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. The more powerful turbocharged engine configuration is rated at 22 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Mazda doesn’t currently offer a hybrid option for the CX-5.

Every CX-5 has a 10.3-inch display controlled via a circular knob. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard across all models and you also have remote functions controlled by your smartphone.

12 Cars Similar to the 2022 Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 is undoubtedly a great car, but it’s great to know your options before making that final decision. We’ve narrowed down that list for you to make this process a little easier.

All the cars on the list were chosen because they offer similar amenities, fuel economy, speed, and price. We hope this list can help you with your final decision.

1. Nissan Rogue

2019 Brand new white Nissan Rogue displayed in a NIssan Auto store in Poland.

Unlike the CX-5, the Nissan Rogue doesn’t come standard with all-wheel drive, though there is an option. It has a very ergonomic design with lots of cargo space and modern technology. It can do 0-60 in 8.2 seconds and reach a top speed of 116 mph.

Nissan has four trims for the rouge with pricing starting at $28,375 up to $38,155. The SV trim falls right in the middle, and this trim would be my recommendation. With this trim, you get larger 18-inch wheels, a 360-degree camera on the exterior, and Nissan’s driving assist.

The Rogue has a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that comes standard with all models. This is paired with a CVT transmission and the option of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The Rogue’s 201 horsepower isn’t the fastest, but it’s quick enough to get you around.

Fuel economy is rated at 30 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the highway. An 8.0-inch touchscreen display is standard, but the higher trims have the option for a 9.0-inch screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard. Compared to the CX-5, the Rouge has fantastic fuel economy.

2. Toyota Rav4

Cool black and white Toyota Rav4 hybrid showcased in Toyota Paris, France.

The Rav4 is perhaps one of the most popular SUV options for new buyers. It is a practical, efficient, and affordable option. It has an estimated 27 mpg city and 35 mpg highway. This keeps it fairly competitive with the other SUVs on this list.

A 203-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine is standard, and this comes with front-wheel drive or the optional all-wheel-drive on higher trims. 0-60 takes 8.4 seconds with a top speed of 119 mph. The Rav4 also has a perfect five-star safety rating.

Toyota offers 6 trims for the Rav4, ranging from $28,190 to $38,130. The XLE premium starts at $32,550 and would be our preferred pick. You get a power liftgate, leather interior, and 19-inch wheels. This price keeps it competitive with its competitors.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard features, and the Rav4 has many optional upgrades. JBL surround sound audio, a wireless charging pad, and a 4g hotspot are some of these optional features. A 7.0-inch touchscreen comes in the lower trim, while an 8.0-inch starts with the XLE trim.

3. Honda CR-V

All black Honda Crv for sale at the Honda dealership store at Brussels, Belgium.

Honda started making CR-Vs in 1997 and since then, they’ve become one of the most reliable options for SUVs. The interior uses a blend of materials to make a stunning finish. It also has a lot of cargo space and amenities.

Starting at $28,045 for the lowest trim, and $39,045 for the highest trim.  I recommend the EX Hybrid because not only is it more fuel-efficient, but it also offers dual-zone climate control, blind-spot monitoring, and many more options.

A 1.5-liter four-cylinder making 190 horsepower comes with most CRVs. The CVT transmission made by Honda has been highly praised compared to other manufacturers. The CRV’s hybrid option has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors. This is good for 212 horsepower.

0-60 takes you 7.5 seconds and the top speed is 103 mph. Non-hybrid CRVs are rated at 28 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. Hybrid CRVs have a 40 mpg city and 35 mpg highway estimated rating. These numbers are impressive for an SUV.

Honda’s infotainment system isn’t the best when compared to the other cars on this list, but it does have many standard features. Base models come with a 5.0-inch touchscreen display and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.

4. Hyundai Tucson

Brand new Hyundai Tucson with all white colored at the Hyundai dealership store Brussels, Belgium.

With the Tuscon, you get a very bold design with a well-equipped interior. A hybrid and plug-in hybrid are both offered with the Tuscon. Hyundai offers 12 different trim levels with the base starting at $26,195 and the top trim starting at $43,775.

I would suggest going with the SEL trim because it offers a sunroof, blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, heated seats, and a 10.3-inch touchscreen standard display. These features make this trim great overall value.

The entry-level engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower, linked with an eight-speed automatic transmission. FWD is basic, however, AWD is also optional. Hybrid options have a 227 horsepower four-cylinder engine, while the plug-in hybrids have a 261 horsepower four-cylinder. 0-60 is 7.1 seconds or 8.8 seconds, with a top speed of 120 mph depending on the model.

Fuel economy is rated at 26 mph in the city and 33 mpg on the highway with the front-wheel-drive trims. Hybrid models get 38 mpg both in the city and on the highway. The plug-in hybrid model gets an equivalent of 80 mpg.

5. Volkswagen Tiguan

White Volkswagen Tiguan trailing at the lands of the forest to test it's durability feature.

Volkswagen’s Tiguan offers a simplistic, yet functional modern design. It is one of the only SUVs in this class to offer seating for up to seven people. The fuel economy is estimated to be 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

Pricing begins at $27,785 for the base trim and $38,615 for the highest trim. The SE trim offers larger 18-inch wheels, lane-keep assist, and autonomous driving modes. A sunroof can be added for $1,200, but it’s not standard.

All trims come with a 184-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, with front-wheel drive standard and the option for all-wheel drive. It takes the Tiguan 9.1 seconds to reach 0-60 and the top speed is 125 mph.

Compared to the CX-5, the Tiguan is slower, similar in fuel economy, and offers a similar luxurious feel with its spacious interior.

6. Kia Sportage

All red Kia Sportage displayed at a Kia auto dealership store.

The Sportage has a very extravagant design, with a unique front grille design and headlights. Its body design allows for more cargo space as well as a more spacious interior. Kia offers 10 trims for the Sportage, ranging from $27,245 to $38,045 for the highest trim.

The EX hybrid would be my recommendation. Hybrid models have improved mpg and throttle response. A wireless phone charging pad, 12.3-inch touchscreen display, and heated front seats are some of the features offered by this trim.

The base powertrain is a 187-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Hybrid models are powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine, and one electric motor making 226 horsepower.

Each variant can be had with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. 0-60 is 8.0-8.8 seconds depending on the engine configuration and the top speed is 130 mph.

Base trims have an estimated fuel economy of 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway. Hybrid models are rated up to 42 mpg in the city and 44 mpg on the highway. Comparing this to the CX-5, the option of a hybrid provides much better fuel economy.

7. Ford Bronco Sport

Classy and cool Ford Bronco Sport parked at a farm with a beautiful sun set at the background.

Ford’s Bronco Sport has one key difference when compared to other SUVs in this segment. It is an off-roading beast that can handle just about any terrain.

The Bronco has a top speed of 125 mph and gets you from 0-60 in 5.7 seconds. Your engine configuration options are a 1.5-liter three-cylinder, and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

Four trims are offered to start at $29,860 and  up to $38,185. The  dlands is the most expensive trim, but it’s the trim I would recommend.

It’s equipped with a 245-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder engine, all-wheel drive, lifted suspension, and an upgraded suspension designed for off-roading.

The fuel economy is a little compromised when it comes to Bronco Sport. The base engine has an estimated 25 mpg in the city, and 28 mpg on the highway. Stepping up the four-cylinder, you can expect 21 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. This is much lower than every car on this list.

8. Chevrolet Equinox

Front view of a white Chevrolet Equinox SUV parked outisde somewhere at Belarus.

The Chevrolet Equinox is one of America’s most popular SUVs. It isn’t as stylish or fast as many other cars in this segment, but it does just enough to get the job done. There is sufficient leg room, plenty of cargo space, and offers more than enough cupholders.

A turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 170 horsepower is the only configuration available. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is optional. 0-60 is accomplished in 8.9 seconds with a top speed of 24 mph.

There are four trims available, ranging from $27,445 up to $32,645 for the Premier trim. The LT trim would be my recommendation because it has a beautiful chrome exterior, eight-way power-adjustable seats, and much more.

You can expect 26 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway. These numbers aren’t as great when comparing them to some of the hybrid options previously mentioned.

9. Mazda CX-50

Front view of the upcoming 2023 brown Mazda Cx-50 model

Mazda has released the all-new CX-50 for 2023. It was made to rival some of the other cars previously covered in this segment. The CX-50 is available with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine making 187 horsepower or a turbocharged variant that makes 256 horsepower. All-wheel drive is standard and 0-60 takes 6.2-8.0 seconds with a top speed of 125 mph.

Mazda offers 9 different trims ranging from $28,025 to $42,775. I would suggest the Turbo trim because it offers more power, more towing capacity, and more features such as a sunroof, and a larger display.

The CX-50 offers seating for up to six passengers, with a luxurious interior and tons of cargo space. Fuel economy is rated at 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, with these numbers dropping 1 mpg with the turbo model.

10. GMC Terrain

Front view of a cherry red 2021 model GMC terrain at a automobile dealership exhibit in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

The GMC Terrain offers a truck-ish design and many amenities that keeps it competitive in this segment. Pricing starts at $29,545 up to $38,245 for the Denali trim. I would recommend the base trim because of its price, touchscreen infotainment system, and driving aids that come standard.

The standard for the Terrain is a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission.  Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is optional. It takes 8.9 seconds to reach 0-60 and the top speed is 120 mpg.

While the interior is spacious and offers a great cargo room, the build quality is lacking compared to the CX-50 and other SUVs on this list. Wireless AppleCarplay and Android Auto are standard across all trims.

The Trailhawk has a V-6 engine standard as well as all-wheel drive, heated front seats, off-roading suspension, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and so much more.

A 3.2-liter four-cylinder V-6 producing 270 hp is standard, though a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-four-cylinder is optional. Both have the option of either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. 0-60 takes 7.6 seconds and the top speed is 114 mph.

Hybrid models offer a turbo 1.6-liter four-cylinder and a 44.0-kW electric motor that comes out to 227-horsepower. The Plug-in Hybrid has a larger 66.9-kW electric motor that makes 261-horsepower. 0-60 is  7.6 seconds with a top speed of 127 mph.

Twelve trims are offered and pricing begins at $30,845 up to $49,345. The EX trim is closer to the middle but has a more competitive price. Features include leather seats, heated front seats, remote start, and larger 18-inch wheels.

Mazda CX-5 FAQs

Here are the answers to some of your burning questions regarding the CX-5.

When It Comes To Off-roading, How Does The Mazda Cx-5 Fare?

All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Mazda CX-5, just like it is on all of our previous Mazda crossovers (AWD).

To ensure the best possible traction control in severe rain, the CX-5’s intelligent drivetrain makes use of specific sensors and integrates them with numerous other technologies.

Is the Mazda Cx-5 Able to Tow A Boat?

The boat’s and its trailer’s weight is a factor. The Mazda CX-5 can tow 2,000 pounds with its standard 187 hp four-cylinder engine and optional diesel engine.

See also  12 Cars Similar to the Kia Rio

It’s possible to tow 3,500 pounds with  AWD in the Grand Touring Reserve and Signature trim levels, but the 250-hp variant isn’t available. When towing a 2,500-pound watercraft, a 250-horsepower engine may be more appropriate.

Is It Possible To Flat Tow The Mazda Cx-5?

Yes, if the vehicle has front-wheel drive and is in neutral gear. Your Mazda CX-5 with AWD, on the other hand, should be pulled with all four wheels elevated.

Safe flat towing may necessitate the purchase of additional equipment, so renting a Mazda may not be the best option.
