Unfortunately, not all 3 row SUVs have Captain chairs in their various models. Even if their highest luxury models, there are some SUVs that strive to offer more seats since the Captain chair eliminates three seats in a row.

Benefits to Choosing Captain Chairs in Your SUV

If you are looking for a few good reasons to purchase an SUV with Captain seats, there are a few that will make you consider adding it to your must list.

  1. Private Space
  2. Comfortable and Adjustable
  3. Added Floor Space
  4. Storage in the Center

Private Space

Nothing can make a trip miserable like two kids fighting because the other is in their space and not giving them any room. That argument is completely eliminated with the use of Captain seats. No more than one person can sit in a Captain’s seat, so there is a guarantee of personal and private space.

For long trips and families with siblings, this is very important to reduce arguments and stress. Too many arguments are started in the vehicle because of space and not being able to be comfortable.

Comfortable and Adjustable

These seats are designed with additional support compared to the average seats that would otherwise be replacing this row. You are able to move the Captain chair, adjusting it backward, forwards, and moving it so that long rides are a breeze for your family members.

You do not have to share a recline in your seat with someone else who may not want to go backwards or not want to sit straight. These seats will have the same adjustment options as the chairs in the front seat.

Added Floor Space

Does it seem like you are lacking space in your current SUV? When you purchase a model that has Captain seats, you get back some of that floor space. This is great for backpacks, ball bags, and other things that you need to transport in addition to your family members.

If there is not a console and you have the walkway to the third row, then you have really landed on prime floor space that can hold a number of different things.

Storage in the Center

If your Captain seats have a center console between them, then you just opened yourself up to crafty storage spaces that are tucked away and keep your SUV clean despite all the traveling you are doing. They often have cup holders to secure these in the backseat and make a great space to use electronics.

Cons of Captain Seats

There are some things about Captain chairs that are not as attractive as the pros list, and you need to keep them in mind.

  1. Loss of One Seat
  2. Moving Cargo
  3. Cost

Loss of One Seat

When you opt for the captain seats in that second row, you are eliminating a possible seat option. If you have a large family, then it may not be worth giving up that seat for two comfortable seats, especially if you are always short of one seat for your family.

Moving Cargo

While the extra floor space in your SUV is nice between the Captain seats, you may find that your cargo likes to move while you are driving. Slamming on brakes or having to jump lanes quickly to avoid an accident can move backpacks from one row to the next in a matter of seconds.

Cost

The biggest con to Captain chairs in your SUV is the cost. Even if this is an economy brand SUV, Captain seats are a luxury and will always cost more when you opt for that package. Depending on where you want to keep your payments and financing, this could have a significant impact on the cost of the vehicle.

Are You Ready To Make The Switch?

Whether you are looking to do a trade or make a brand new purchase, keep in mind that Captain chairs are a great addition in most situations. If your family can be accommodated by the loss of a seat and the extra cost fits in your budget, the Captain chair might be the right option for you.
