2022 Ford Maverick

The Ford Maverick is a great compromise between the Ford Bronco Sport and the Ford Ranger. A hybrid 2.5-liter four-cylinder is standard for the Maverick. This comes standard with front-wheel drive and a CVT transmission.

A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is also available. 0-60 is 5.9 seconds and the top speed is 110 mph. Pricing starts at $21,490 to $27,355. Three trims are available; the XL, XLT, and Lariat.

The XLT trim offers 17-inch wheels, a power lock tailgate, and more standard features than the base trim. For only $2000 more than the base trim, you get far more standard features and comforts.

The Maverick can only tow 2000 pounds, which makes it one of the lowest in this category, but it’s also one of the only trucks to offer a hybrid option.

The Maverick only comes in crew cab configurations, which means you get four doors and seating for up to five people. Apple Carplay and Android Auto are standard, and so is a Wifi hotspot. Ambient lighting, power-adjustable seats, and dual-zone climate control are some of the great features offered by the Maverick.

Hybrid variants are rated for 42 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Non-hybrid options have a fuel economy of 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. All-wheel-drive models see a slight decrease of 22 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway.

The SEL Premium trim is our preferred trim since it has an upgraded engine, all-wheel drive standard, and more standard tech. Two powertrains are offered to start with the base 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 191-horsepower. The upgraded option is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged making 281-horsepower.

All-wheel drive is optional and an eight-speed automatic is standard. It takes the Santa Cruz 6.0 seconds to reach 0-60 and the top speed is 133 mph.

The turbocharged engine configuration can tow up to 5000 pounds while the non-turbo option is capped at 3500 pounds. An 8.0-inch display is standard, but a 10.3-inch display is available. With Hyundai’s Blue Link, you can start the truck and control the doors via the app or Amazon Alexa.

Fuel economy is rated at 21 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway for the base engine, though all-wheel drive increases these numbers by 1 mpg. The turbocharged variant has a fuel economy of 9 mpg in the city and 27 on the highway.

2. 2022 Honda Ridgeline

Honda’s Ridgeline is one of the most versatile trucks in this segment and is highly rated by most reviewers. It’s a perfect balance between a midsize truck and a crossover, which leads to a more spacious interior and great truck bed space. The fuel economy is 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.

All-wheel drive options are rated for a combined 28 mpg. There are four trims available and pricing starts at $39,435 up to $46,865. I suggest the RTL trim because you get a mix of desirable features and equipment, such as a leather interior.

All-wheel drive is standard across all models with a towing capacity of 5000 pounds. While the Ridgeline is capable of doing off-roading activities, it isn’t the best. The only powertrain available is a 3.5-liter V-6 making 280-horsepower with all-wheel drive standard. 0-60 takes 6.2 seconds with a top speed of 111 mph.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across all models, as well as an 8.0-inch display. The interior is extremely spacious, though we wish Honda didn’t use as much hard plastic as they did. The truck bed is one of the biggest in this segment, so you shouldn’t have a problem fitting your equipment in there.

3. 2023 Ford Ranger

Pricing begins at $27,425 to $41,000 with five trims available. The XLT has a smaller cab and has rear-wheel drive, which allows it to accelerate faster. Emergency braking and collision warning are standard for this trim.

With the optional tow package, the Ranger is capable of towing 7500 pounds. Rear-wheel-drive models have a fuel economy of 21 mpg in the city and 26 on the highway. All-wheel-drive models have a rating of 20/24 mpg city/highway.

Extended cabs or crew cabs are optional for all models. Crew cabs have more interior room that can seat up to five people. To unlock Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, you have to upgrade to the XLT trim.

4. 2022 Chevrolet Colorado

The Chevrolet Colorado offers buyers the versatility of a full-size pickup truck without the size compromise. It can tow between 7000-7700 pounds. Base engines have a fuel rating of 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. V-6 models have a fuel economy of 18 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway.

Chevrolet has four trims available with pricing starting at $26,930 to $44,045. The ZR2 trim is the most expensive, but it is my recommendation. It has a wide body, more room on the interior, and every feature you may want.

Many engine configurations are available, starting with a four-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic transmission, a 3.6-liter V-6 that makes 308-horsepower, and a 2.8-liter four-cylinder diesel engine. The diesel engine does 0-60 in 9.1 seconds, while the V-6 does it in 7.0 seconds. The top speed is limited to 135 mph.

The base four-cylinder engine earns 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. The V-6 model earns 18 mpg in the city and 25 on the highway. The rear-wheel-drive diesel has the best fuel economy at 20 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

5. 2023 GMC Canyon

GMC’s Canyon is one of the highest-rated midsize pickup trucks on the road. With standard features like Apple Carplay and Android Auto, leather interior, and great bed space, we can see why. Four trims are offered with prices ranging from $28,95 to $42,595.

I suggest the Elevation trim since it has a V-6 engine and all-wheel drive. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as well as automatic climate control and remote start. The premium package adds heated front seats and leather upholstery.

The base engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that I would not recommend. A 3.6-liter V-6 that makes 308-horsepower is also offered and this is paired with 8-speed automatic transmission. 0-60 takes 6.7 seconds and the top speed is 120 mph.

With a very futuristic design and big frame, the Frontier is one of the best options on the market. Nissan chose to go with the 3.8-liter V-6 that makes 310-horsepower for all models. 0-60 is accomplished in 7.3 seconds, reaching a top speed of 113 mph.

Pricing starts at $29,915 up to $38,390 for the Pro-4X trim. The SV trim provides the perfect balance of desirable features. Upgrading to this trim offers blind-spot monitoring, emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control.

Towing capacity is 6720 pounds which means it lags behind some of the other trucks in this segment. Rear-wheel-drive models have a fuel economy of 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. Four-wheel-drive models drop to 17 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.

The interior is stunning with an optional heated steering wheel and upgraded gauge cluster. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also standard, as well as an 8.0-inch display.

7. 2023 Toyota Tacoma

Base models are equipped with a 7.0-inch display while higher trims have an 8.0-inch display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are finally available as well as wireless charging.

8. 2022 Jeep Gladiator

Compared to every other truck in this segment, the Jeep Gladiator is perhaps the most versatile. All four doors and the roof are removable, which is identical to most Jeeps. Unlike other Jeeps, the Gladiator offers a truck bed and a longer wheel-base for an easier ride.

Jeep offers 10 different trims with prices starting at $37,680 to $54,765. I suggest the Sport S trim because it offers the most features you would desire, along with a great list of standard tech.

A 3.6-liter V-6 engine that makes 285-horsepower is standard. This is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission or 8-speed automatic. A diesel 3.0-liter V-6 is also offered by Jeep. 0-60 takes 7.3 seconds and the top speed is 97 mph. This makes it one of the slowest trucks so far.

The Gladiator can tow up to 7600 pounds, which is extremely impressive. Manual transmissions have a fuel rating of 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. Automatic variants are rated at 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.

Diesel versions have the highest fuel economy at 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.

9. 2022 Ford Bronco Sport

While the Ford Bronco Sport is no pickup truck, it’s still a great off-roading vehicle that can handle any terrain. Towing capacity is limited to 2200 pounds, which is still good for its size. It’s also very quick with a 0-60 time of 5.7 seconds and a top speed of 125 mph.

Ford offers four trims for the Bronco, ranging from $29,860 up to $38,185. The most expensive trim, Badlands, is my suggestion. It has a turbo four-cylinder engine, all-wheel drive, and an upgraded suspension that makes off-roading fun.

The fuel economy is similar to that of most trucks we’ve covered. The base engine has a fuel economy rated at 25 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. Higher trims have a fuel economy of 21 mpg city and 26 mpg highway.

There are only two options when it comes to the powertrain. You can choose between a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine and a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine. No hybrid option is available for Bronco Sport.

10. 2023 Kia Telluride

Though the Telluride doesn’t offer a bed, it does offer a higher towing capacity than the Ford Maverick at 5000 pounds. It can also seat up to eight people, which is more than every truck in this segment. Pricing starts at $35,00 for the base trim, up to $49,000 for the highest trim.

I recommend the SX trim because it has 20-inch rims, a sunroof for the front and rear, captain’s chairs for the second row, and all-wheel drive. A prestige package is also available that lets you add even more features.

A V-6 engine paired with 8-speed automatic transmission is an option. Front-wheel drive variants have a fuel economy of 20 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. All-wheel-drive models have a fuel rating of 19 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. 0-60 takes the Telluride 7.0 seconds and the top speed is 132 mph.

11. 2023 Nissan Pathfinder

The Nissan Pathfinder can seat up to seven people and has a towing capacity of 6000 pounds. The cabin is spacious enough to fit your entire family comfortably for long road trips. Five trims are available with pricing starting at $36,000 up to $49,000.

Going with the SL trim gives you a 9.0-inch display, wireless Apple CarPlay, wireless charging, and a 360-degree camera. The premium package includes a sunroof, 20-inch wheels, and a Bose stereo system.

Nissan offers just one engine configuration. You get a 3.5-liter V-6 paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission that makes 284-horsepower. 0-60 is achieved in 6.7 seconds with a top speed of 119 mph. Front-wheel drive is standard across all trims, though all-wheel drive is available.

All-wheel-drive models have a fuel economy rating of 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Front-wheel-drive models have a rating of 21 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. No hybrid option is currently available.

12. 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is an off-roading beast that can do it all. It has a rugged design with a beautiful interior that won’t leave you wanting more. You can get either a 3.6-liter V-6 or a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 engine. The towing capacity is 6200 pounds.

A total of 13 trims are available for the Grand Cherokee. Prices start at $40,20 up to $76,095. I recommend going with the Limited trim because it is on the lower end of prices and still provides a great package.

Fuel economy is rated at 19 mpg in the city and 6 mpg on the highway for the V-6 models with rear-wheel drive. Adding all-wheel drive sees these numbers drop by 1 mpg. V-8 models have a fuel economy of 14 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway.

A hybrid option is also available that allows the Cherokee to cruise up to 25 miles on a full charge. The interior of the Grand Cherokee is one of the best we’ve covered so far. You get a full leather interior and all the tech you might imagine.
