Lexus NX

Lexus has made great strides in improving the NX for 2022. They added a more modern interior and a slew of great standard tech. Lexus also improved the styling of the NX with new LED headlights and a more aggressive design.

Four trims are available, starting with a starting price of $39,425 up to $58,475. I suggest the NX350 F Sport trim because it has a powerful turbocharged engine, 14.0-inch infotainment system, leather seats, ambient lighting, 20-inch wheels, and adaptive headlights. This is all included in the Luxury package.

Four powertrain configurations are available for the Lexus NX. Base models have a 2.5-liter four-cylinder producing 203-horsepower. Secondly, there is a 275-horsepower 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder.

Both options come standard with an 8-speed automatic transmission and either front-wheel or all-wheel drive. Hybrid options are now available for the NX. The NX350H is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, paired with two electric motors that make 239-horsepower.

The NX450h+ has a 302-horsepower plug-in-hybrid. Both hybrids have an all-wheel-drive standard system. 0-60 takes 6.6 seconds with a top speed of 126 mph.

Base models can expect 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Hybrid models have a fuel economy rating of 41 mpg city and 37 on the highway. Lexus NCC is capable of towing up to 2,000 pounds.

  • Price
  • Drivetrain
  • Powertrain
  • Top Speed
  • Trims and more

1. Volvo XC40

Front and side view of volvo xc40 car in a white color at the parking near river.

The Volvo XC40 has great standard driver-assist tech and a beautiful interior. Semi-autonomous driving is available and the cargo space is more than generous. Fuel economy is rated at 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

It boasts a 0-60 time of 6.2 seconds with a top speed of 131 mph.

Pricing starts at $36,195 up to $42,945 with six trims offered. We’d suggest the T5 R-Design trims since it offers all-wheel drive standards, a panoramic roof, and a sporty design. Adding the Advanced package gives you semi-autonomous driving and a 360-degree surround-view camera.

All XC40 models come with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that makes either 184 or 248 horsepower. The more powerful T5 version has an all-wheel-drive standard paired with 8-speed automatic transmission. Towing capacity is 3,500 pounds, which is much higher than the Lexus NX.

2. 2023 BMW X1

Close up photo of bmw x1 car parked in the middle of road during winter with beautiful background.

The BMW X1 is a practical SUV with great handling and beautiful styling. All new models utilize a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that is mated to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. BMW also added all-wheel drive. This engine produces 241-horsepower and gets you from 0-60 in 6.2 seconds with a top speed of 129 mph.

Only one trim is available for the X1. Plenty of features are available, but we’d recommend adding the Convenience package. With this package, you get wireless charging, keyless entry, a panoramic sunroof, and more.

The interior has a very spacious and modern design. Some of the standard features are ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, and a power liftgate. Towing capacity for the X1 is 3,700 pounds. The fuel economy for this year is estimated to be around 23 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway.

3. 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLA-class

A photo of red mercedes benz gla class car on a dustry street.

When it comes to styling and luxuries, it is quite hard to compete with Mercedes. The GLA offers all the features you would expect to find on larger Mercedes SUVs. Two trims are available with pricing starting at $37,450 up to $39,450.

We suggest the GLA250 4Matic trim because it adds all-wheel drive and off-roading capabilities.

All models are powered by a 221-horsepower  2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder producing 221-horsepower. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive is standard. 0-60 takes just 6.3 seconds and the top speed is 130 mph.

The GLA’s fuel economy is estimated to be 25 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. A plug-in-hybrid version will be available later, according to Mercedes.

Compared to previous models, Mercedes added five more inches of legroom in the rear as well as increased cargo space. The GLA can tow up to 4,000 pounds.

4. 2022 Audi Q3

A photo of audi q3 in a white color parked at the side street.

Audi’s Q3 is currently the smallest SUV offered by Audi. Because of its size, the seating space isn’t as generous as we’d like and the interior doesn’t live up to the expectations we have for Audi. Four trims are offered to start from $37,595 to $43,195.

The fuel economy is estimated at 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

Of the four trims, I’d recommend the S-line Premium Plus trim. Though it’s the most expensive trim in the lineup, it comes with all the desirable features such as blind-spot monitoring, pushes to start, and adaptive cruise control.

It is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that can make either 184 or 228 horsepower. This comes standard with all-wheel drive and 8-speed automatic transmission. 0-60 takes the Q3 7.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 130 mph.

The throttle response takes some getting used to because of the turbo delay.

The Q3 has a fuel economy estimate of 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. These numbers are similar to those of the Lexus NX. Q3’s are capable of towing 4,400 pounds, which makes it one of the highest in this segment.

5. 2022 Hyundai Tucson

Side view photo of hyundai tucson parked outside the street.

The Hyundai Tuscon offers a very intriguing design and a well-equipped interior. While it isn’t quite as nice as the Lexus NX, it can hold its own. Twelve trims are available with pricing ranging from $26,195 to $43,775. A hybrid and a plug-in hybrid are available.

I suggest the SEL trim since it comes equipped with standard features like blind-spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control, and a 10.3-inch infotainment display.

Entry-level trims get a 187-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. FWD is basic, though AWD is optional. Hybrid models have a 227-horsepower four-cylinder engine and the plug-in hybrid options receive a 261-horsepower four-cylinder engine.

It takes Tucson 7.1 seconds or 8.8 seconds to reach 60 mph depending on the model. The top speed is 120 mph.

Hyundai Tucson has a fuel economy rated at 26 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway for FWD trims. With the hybrid trims, you can expect 38 mpg in the city and on the highway. Plug-in hybrids achieve the best fuel economy of 80 mpg combined. Towing capacity is just 2,000 pounds.

6. 2022 Mazda CX-5

A photo of mazda cx 5 car driving at country side road.

All-new for 2022, the Mazda CX-5 has an upgraded interior and brilliant new design. Mazda did an excellent job of keeping the CX-5 budget-friendly while offering features similar to cars outside its price range. Eight trims are available with prices ranging from $27,475 to $40,225.

The Turbo trim offers an upgraded engine option, improved handling, sporty accents, and red stitching on the seats. Handling is also improved on this trim and you can expect a better throttle response.

Two engine options are available for the CX-5. A 187-horsepower four-cylinder is standard, and a 250-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder is offered on higher trims. Both come with a 6-speed automatic transmission and AWD is standard. 0-60 takes 6.1 seconds and the top speed is 130 mph.

Base models have a fuel economy rating of 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Turbocharged options have a lower fuel economy rating of 22 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Unfortunately, Mazda does not offer a hybrid option.

Apple Carplay and Android Auto are standard, as well as remote functions controlled by your smartphone. The towing capacity is 2,000 pounds, which puts it closer to the bottom of this list.

7. 2022 Acura RDX

Side view photo white acura rdx parked outside the house.

Starting at $40,600 the Acura RDX’s interior is a joy to spend time in, in addition to its exceptional build quality and durability. Only a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine is available in the 2022 Acura RDX. Despite the small size, the crossover still packs a punch.

The car can go from 0 to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds and can reach a top speed of 113 mph.

In terms of comfort and quietness, the new RDX is a step up from last year’s model. With 38 inches of legroom in the back seat, it’s among the best in its class.

This car is well-equipped, with features like an electric sunroof, keyless ignition, heated and 12-way power-adjustable front seats, dual climate control, and a superb audio/video system.

The forward-collision warning system includes automatic emergency braking and pedestrian detection, as well as blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alerts, and adaptive cruise control.

8. 2023 Kia Sportage

Close up photo of white kia sportage in the auto show.

The Sportage has a very stunning design, and can easily be identified by its unique front grille and orange daytime running headlights. This unique design allows the Sportage to offer a spacious interior and cargo space. Ten trims are available with prices starting at $27,245 to $38,045.

I suggest the EX Hybrid trim. Hybrid models offer better fuel economy which saves you more money in the long term. A 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, heated front seats, and wireless charging pads are some of the great features available on this model.

The base engine is a 187-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder that is paired with 8-speed automatic transmission. The hybrid model uses a 1.6-liter turbocharged engine mated to one electric motor that makes 226-horsepower. FWD or AWD is optional. 0-60 is between 8.0-8.8 seconds depending on the model with a top speed of 130 mph.

Fuel economy for the base trim is estimated to be 25 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. Hybrid variants are rated for up to 42 mpg in the city and 44 mpg on the highway. The towing capacity for the Sportage is 1,650 pounds.

9. 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan

Front and side view of volkswage tiguan car in a white color driving in forest.

If you prefer a more simplistic design that gets the job done, the Tiguan is the perfect SUV for you. It is one of the only cars in this segment that offers seating for up to seven people. Fuel economy is rated at 23 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway.

Volkswagen offers four trims and pricing starts at $27,785 to $38,615. We’d suggest going with the SE trim since it offers a slew of great basic features. With this trim, you get lane-keep assist, autonomous driving, and 18-inch wheels.

One engine option is available and it is a turbocharged 184-horsepower four-cylinder. FWD is standard for all models, but Volkswagen gives you the option to add AWD. 0-60 is accomplished in 9.1 seconds with a top speed of 125 mph.

Towing capacity for the Tiguan is 1,500 pounds, which makes it the lowest we have seen so far.

10. 2022 Toyota Rav4

Close up photo of new toyota rav4 in a white color displayed inside the establishment.

Toyota’s Rav 4 continues to be one of the best-selling SUVs and we can see why. Not only is it affordable, but it is also practical and efficient. The fuel economy is estimated to be 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway.

Six trims are available for the Rav4 with pricing starting at $28,190 up to $38,130.  The XLE trim is our suggested pick because it offers a leather interior, 19-inch wheels, and a power liftgate. We believe it is the best value in the Rav4s lineup.

The base engine is a 203-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder that comes standard with FWD. All-wheel drive is optional on higher trim models. It takes the Rav4 8.4 seconds to reach 60 mph and the top speed is 119 mph.

There are many upgradable features offered on the Rav4. You can get JBL for surround sound audio, a 4G hotspot, or even a wireless charging pad. Apple Carplay and Android Auto are also standard. Towing capacity is capped at 3,500 pounds.

11. 2022 Volvo XC60

A photo of volvo xc60 car parked for recharging.

The Volvo XC60 offers a stylish design, clean body lines, and an elegant interior. Cargo space is generous enough for the average driver and three powertrains are available, as well as a plug-in hybrid model. Pricing begins at $43,745 to $70,595 with eight trims being offered.

Our suggestion would be the R-Design trim. It offers a great list of features that keeps it competitive within this segment, including the more powerful engine variant.

The powertrains are offered; B5, B6, and T8. All configurations are paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission and the standard AWD. The B5 has a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with a 48-volt hybrid system that makes 247-horsepower.

The B6 has the same engine as the B5 but Volvo adds a supercharger. T8 variants use the same engine as the B6 models but add two electric motors making 455-horsepower. 0-60 takes the XC60 only 4.5 seconds and the top speed is 112 mph.

Fuel economy for the B5 is rated at 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway. B6 models have a rating of 21 mpg city and 27 mpg on the highway. Hybrid models get 63 MPGe. owing capacity is 3,500 pounds.

Front and side view of white cadillac xt4 on parking space outside.

The Cadillac XT4 is America’s take on a luxury SUV. It has sharp styling, a spacious cabin, and a great interior. It has a great road presence and is sure to turn heads. XT4 models earn a combined 30 mpg. 0-60 takes 7.8 seconds and the top speed of the XT4 is 132 mph.

Cadillac offers three trims and pricing starts at $36,940 up to $40,740. The FWD Sport is our recommended trim. It has a unique blacked-out exterior trim, active suspension, bolstered seats, and an optional leather interior.

All XT4 trims come equipped with a four-cylinder turbocharged engine that makes 235-horsepower. It is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission with the option of FWD or AWD. FWD models earn 30 mpg combined, while AWD models earn 29 mpg combined.
